R-23: the refrigerant for ultra-low temperatures
R-23 is a non-ozone-depleting azeotropic HFC refrigerant used in refrigeration systems operating at ultra-low temperatures (from -60°C to -100°C). It is suitable for both new systems and as a retrofit replacement in legacy systems operating with HCFC R-13 and R-503. R-23 is used exclusively in cascade systems, with evaporation temperatures between -60°C and -100°C and condensation temperatures between -10°C and -40°C. Its thermodynamic properties closely resemble those of R-13.
Applications:
Industrial cooling systems
Pharmaceutical production plants
Medical use (e.g. blood banks)
Material testing
Cryomats and cryostats
High vacuum
Regarding the refrigerant charge, the same parameters used for the replaced products (HCFC R-13 and R-503) can be applied, provided the expansion vessel is replaced with a larger one. The optimal refrigerant charge is between -10% and -20% compared to that of R-13 and R-503. Thanks to its azeotropic nature, it can be topped up directly in the event of refrigerant leaks from the system. The cooling capacity of R-23 is higher than that of R-13 and lower than that of R-503. In terms of energy efficiency, it is equivalent to R-13 and approximately 10% lower than R-503. Due to its very high GWP value, R-23 will be subject to significant restrictions as a result of the progressive implementation of European F-Gas Regulation No. 517/2014.
Lubricants:
R-23 is compatible with POE synthetic lubricants.
